Elastocon offers two specimen cutting presses – a manual press, EP 08, and a pneumatic press, EP 02 – for preparation of test specimens of rubber and plastic materials by punching. The cutting presses are small and and have a system for quick change of cutting dies. They stand secure on rubber feet and do not need to be attached to the table.

The cutting die is an important part of sample preparation of rubber and plastic. It is crucial that the cutting die is flawless and will give you excellent samples when you cut. The smallest nick in the sample could cause a failure that will represent your sample preparation instead of your materials properties. Elastocon offers specimen cutting dies, EP 04, manufactured in both standard and special shapes.

Cylindrical pieces can be cut from thicker parts of a rubber product with the EP 03 rotating knife.

Besides cutting presses and cutting dies Elastocon also offers other sample preparation equipment, like the conditioning box, EP 05, for conditioning of the samples in a stable environment. The Nick Cutter, EP 07, the Bizerba Slicer, and silver pens are additional sample preparation equipment.

Stress relaxation testing ISO 3384-1, ISO 6914

Relaxation is the decrease in counter pressure, which can be measured in a rubber test piece exposed to constant deformation. The deformation method can either be compression or tension.

Relaxation measuring can be done in two different ways. Either the measurements of the original force and the force after different times can be taken at the test temperature, or all measurements are taken at room temperature, while the samples are stored at increased temperature in between these measurements. In certain cases, relaxation measuring is also done in liquids, for example in oil. This is common for, for example, O-rings.

Stress relaxation tests are becoming more and more popular for determination of rubber properties.

Elastocon offers equipment for stress relaxation testing of rubber that meets the demands for either continuous or discontinuous testing in both tension and compression, in liquid and air, as well as for different temperature intervals. Meets the requirements in ISO 3384, ISO 6914 and ASTM D6147. GM highlights Elastocon’s stress relaxation systems as their reference systems.

Elastocon's EB 02 is a relaxation rig for continuous stress relaxation measurements of rubber in both compression and tension according to ISO 3384, ISO 6914 method A and ASTM D6147. The rig works together with the cell ovens EB 21, EB 22, EB 38 and the programmable temperature cycling cell ovens EB 21LTHTP and EB 17, or with our temperature boxes for test at room temperature and below.

Elastocon offers cell ovens specially designed for stress relaxation tests of rubber. This means that the inner height of the cells are adapted to fit our relaxation rigs to achieve as good thermal contact as possible with the bottom of the cell.

The oven also has an intergrated draught hood that eliminates the changes in the force during the test due to temperature changes in the environment around the top part of the rigs. The hood is made of polycarbonate, and has a temperature control system (Peltier cooling system) capable of keeping the temperature within ± 0,25 °C.

We can also offer two types of temperature boxes, for room temperature and below.

Creep testing of polymers

Creep is the tendency of a solid material to move slowly or deform permanently under the influence of persistent mechanical stresses. It can occur as a result of long-term exposure to high levels of stress that are still below the yield strength of the material. Creep is more severe in materials that are subjected to heat for long periods and generally increases as they near their melting point.

Elastocon offers two types of test equipment for creep testing of polymers – an automatic relaxation and creep tester, EB 18-II-3, and the EB 24 film creep tester.

Hot set testing of cable materials is an easy way to determine if the material used in the insulation or sheathing of cables is sufficiently cross-linked. Crosslinking increases the bonding between the polymer chains in a material. The purpose of crosslinked insulation and outer sheath materials is usually to improve the mechanical and electrical properties.

Elastocon offers two instruments for hot set testing of cable materials: hot set tester EB 16-II and hot set oven basic EB 30.

Fire testing systems

Brandprovningssystem från TAURUS InstrumentsElastocon offers fire testing systems from NETZSCH TAURUS Instruments, which includes instrumentation and methods for investigating the fire behavior of products and materials.

For preventive fire protection, the appropriate choice of materials and components is essential in order to prevent fires altogether or prevent them from spreading. The basis for this decision are fire tests according to German, European and international standards used to classify the flammability and the burn rate of materials for the construction, textile, automobile and electrical industry.

For the construction industry, especially the reaction to fire of building materials with the resulting parameters flammability, flame spread, flaming droplets, combustibility, heat release, calorific value, smoke production and toxicity as well as the fire resistance of building components are of relevance.

The reaction to fire of all materials and structures used for construction such as facades, building and insulation material, plastics, gaskets and floor coverings is tested. Tests regarding fire resistance are performed on various components such as ceilings, walls, doors, windows, protective barriers, bracings, fire protective glazing and fire protection shutters.

Tests in the field/area of mobility focus on the flammability and flame spread rate of materials for the interior of vehicles such as interior lining / trim, seats and floor coverings for aviation, railed vehicles, road vehicles and ships.

The reaction to fire, especially the flame spread and flaming droplets, smoke density, insulation integrity and the formation of corrosive gases on impact of flames/fire of electrical, control and data cables are the basis of fire tests in the field of products of the electrical industry.

Textile products, such as upholstery fabrics, curtains and drapes, decorative materials, floor coverings, protective clothing are primarily tested and classified for flammability, reaction to fire, dripping behavior.

The introduction of the European classification system is based on DIN EN 13501-1 (reaction to fire) and DIN EN 13501-2 (fire resistance).

Equipment for testing recycled plastics

Elastocon offers different types of equipment for testing recycled plastics

Plastic recycling is the processing of plastic waste into other products. Almost all plastic recycling is mechanical by melting and reforming plastic into other items. This can cause polymer degradation at the molecular level and requires the waste to be sorted by colour and polymer type before processing, which is complicated and expensive.

Through material analysis and other testing of recycled plastic, it is ensured, among other things, that the right material has been delivered, what kind of plastic is in the recycled material, what the plastic contains, and the plastic's melting point.

Elastocon offers different types of equipment for testing recycled plastics: identiPol QA2 is used for quality control, and for general material analysis PerkinElmer has instruments for differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Tensile testers, melt index and impact testers for plastics are other types of equipment that we offer from Tinius Olsen.
